Man Utd beaten to Kounde signing by Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur are set to beat Manchester United and Real Madrid to the signature of Jules Kounde, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

Kounde has been high up Man United’s shortlist this summer as they prepare to sign a top-class centre-back.

Meanwhile, the Frenchman is understood to be Madrid’s preferred replacement for Raphael Varane should he leave the club.

Varane’s contract at the Santiago Bernabeu expires next year and a move away is looking increasingly possible, perhaps to Man Utd.

However, according to transfer guru Di Marzio, Spurs are closing in on a deal for Kounde that will see them pay Sevilla €30 million in cash and also send over Davinson Sanchez in part-exchange.

Kounde still needs to give the final okay to the transfer.

The 22-year-old admitted last month during a pre-Euro 2020 press conference at Clairefontaine that he will probably leave Sevilla this summer.

“Regarding my future, it is certain that I will perhaps have to change clubs this summer, but nothing has been finalised yet,” Kounde stated.

“I have not decided anything. My goal is to play in a big club to try to always progress and to win trophies. I might have to move, but that’s not relevant today.”

Kounde played for France at Euro 2020 as the reigning world champions were disappointingly eliminated in the second round by Switzerland on penalties.

He made 88 appearances and scored six goals during his two seasons at Sevilla.

He played a key role as the club won the Europa League in 2020-21, with Inter beaten 3-2 in the final.

Regarded as one of the best young defenders in Europe, Kounde made his international debut against Wales last month in a 2-0 win.
